Top of the Hill (TOPO) Restaurant and Brewery was founded by Scott Maitland in 1994. Their site on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill opened in 1996. They are the eighth oldest surviving brewery in North Carolina.

My insight was we needed a place in Chapel Hill where everybody in the community could come and meet. And when I look back at, now, our, what, 26 years of operation, I think that's the thing I'm most proud of, that I feel like we delivered on that promise.
Scott Maitland founded Top of the Hill in 1994. He is also a military veteran and an adjunct professor of entrepreneurship at UNC Chapel Hill.
